Measurement Lesson Help your class use estimation in a unique, blended approach. We took a trip to the Himalayan Mountains in search of the Yeti (Abominable Snowman). After finding a footprint in the snow, we tried to use our math skills to recreate the possible Yeti that made the footprint. Visit that link here. |

Hands-On Math Measurement We broke up into small groups to tackle some real-life math that we have learned about in class. Here are some of the activities we conducted. 1) The Concept of Area- Students were given two sheets of paper. They rolled one sheet hamburger style and taped it at the edges. The other sheet was rolled hot dog styled and taped it the same way. The students were asked to determine which one held more or if they held the same amount. Some groups immediately recognized that if you multiplied the length and width, the area is the same. Others stuffed items in the two rolls of paper and eventually came to the same conclusion.
Here's where we got this idea: http://www.figurethis.org/challenges/c03/challenge.htm 2. Reindeer Food- We used measuring cups to create reindeer food. The ingredients included 1/2 c. oatmeal, 1/4 c. sugar, and 2 tbs. of food sprinkles. A special poem was included in the mix.

Measurement Conversion/Water Mess- Students brought in various objects with volume in for some math conversion fun. Groups were asked simply to find some conversions by using water to find conversions. When we wrapped up and presented our findings 100% of the given responses were correct! *This photo was actually after school. Opps! Forgot to take it during the actual activity. Thanks Madison and Ty for pretending for me :) 4. What are My Measurements? Each student had the opportunity to trace themselves out on butcher paper with the mission of trying to figure out different measurements. How tall are you in feet? Yards/Meter? Inches? How long are you from arm to arm? This was the one rotation where we ran out of time. Another staged photo after school. Thanks Courtney and Megan! 5. Blocks, Blocks, Blocks- Students were given a bag of blocks and asked to create a quaderillateral of their picking. From there, students recorded and measured their objects length, width, area and perimeter.
6. Computer Sites- Students also utilized our internet links by visiting some of the sites listed on our webpage. Students were able to work with measurement using centimeters and inches. 7. Measurement Man/Woman- Okay, this was completed the day before as it took a little longer. Here is a sample of what we did. I will post a picture from our class later.
Here is where we got the directions- http://www.teachnet-lab.org/miami/2004/concepcion/measurement_man.htm |

This is an original: Listen to an original verse on rounding decimals here. For verse 2- here We created it together, using the Hokey Pokey. To round a decimal/look to the place value/ look to the right/and you look it up and down/is it a 5 or higher?/ if it is then turn around/round it up and clean the rest out/ with zeros. Second verse: To round a decimal/look to the place value/look to the right/and you look it up and down/is it a 4 or less?/ if it is then turn around/keep it and clean the rest out/with zeros!

Place Value We used the place value song through www.rockinthestandards.com. Our prop to support this were place value cards (ex-ten thousand). The posters extend to hundred billion. Download them here. |
